GUILD MEETING: Terry Aske

We are pleased to have Terry Aske as our March speaker for her presentation, “My evolution as an art quilter - from raw beginner to award winner”. Terry is a Canadian textile artist, who has been designing and creating contemporary art quilts in her home studio since 1998.  Terry’s chosen artistic medium is fabric and thread.  Fabric provides shape and color to her work.  Layering and quilting add texture and dimension.  Terry says there is something wonderful about working with fabric - it is soft and flexible, and has both tactile and visual texture. Her style is contemporary, and she uses a variety of techniques, to create both realistic and abstract pieces. The techniques she uses include machine-piecing, fusible appliqué, thread-sketching and free-motion-quilting. She delights in using commercial prints, such as plaids and florals, in unexpected ways. From a distance, viewers observe colors, shapes and values. As one draws nearer to the quilt, the prints add visual texture and interest.

Terry's artwork has been juried into many national and international shows and exhibits, and published in many books and magazines.  Terry has won awards in both the artistic and modern categories.

In her PowerPoint presentation, Terry will focus on the progression of her work in the 20+ years since she first started quilting.  She will discuss her design inspirations, the techniques she uses, as well as her experiences entering quilt shows and magazine challenges. Terry will show images of her quilt studio and many of her quilts, from her first to her most recent work.
