GUILD MEETING: October - Andrea Tsang Jackson

We are pleased to welcome Andrea Tsang Jackson to our October guild meeting. Andrea is a textile artist and quilt designer. After working in various design fields and settings ranging from architecture to museums, the quilting medium called to her. She holds a Master of Architecture from McGill University and a Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. With her art, Andrea strives to push the limits of the quilting medium by exploring scale and dimension and moving traditionally domestic objects into the public realm. Her work often celebrates community and collaboration, and explores ideas of belonging. The rich history of quilting also heavily influences her practice; she sees it as an extension of community across time. Andrea has written two books: Gemology and her newest Quilting: A Modern Creative Journey through an Age-Old Craft was released in February 2025. Andrea lives in Kjipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia with her husband and two sons.

In her lecture, Quilting: The Lab, The Classroom, and The Theatre, Andrea will talk about the myriad reasons that we create quilts - to create, to give, to learn. She will help us see quilting beyond the act of creating: Our quilting practices are a ground for testing. A commitment to creative practice expands what we know, how we challenge ourselves, and what we understand about ourselves. Andrea uses examples from her own artistic path to bring the ideas to life and introduces practical suggestions on how to apply these concepts in your own quilting practice.
